The Gardens at Layer Marney Tower, Essex.

Our gardeners at Layer Marney Tower make sure that the gardens look good throughout the year. If you are planning a wedding more than a year in advance you may like to come and check out the gardens in the month of your wedding the year before. You will be able to see what flowers are out and what the light levels are likely to be.

The main steps in front of the Tower offer an ideal opportunity for photographs not only of the wedding couple, but also of all the guests together, with faces clearly visible. There are parts of the garden that are formal and others that are more natural, such as the boardwalk over the pond. Your photographer will be spoilt for choice when looking for good shots. Guests will relax and enjoy the scent of the flowers as they wander around the gardens that are both peaceful and tranquil.

Gardens Description

The Gardens

The Layer Marney Estate was granted a “license to enclose” in 1267. The layout of the current gardens owes much to Alfred and Keziah Peache, Walter de Zoete and the current owners’ family. There are about 120 acres, comprising parkland, grazed by sheep and horses, arable, woodland and formal gardens.

The gardens are maintained to a high standard and great attention is given to ensuring that it looks attractive at all times of the year. One of the special joys of the gardens at Layer Marney are the views over the lawns, newly planted oak avenue and surrounding arable fields, with the River Blackwater in the distance.
