Tower Testimonials

No visit to Layer Marney is complete without climbing to the top of the Tower. Although there are 99 steps, it is quite an easy climb, with stopping off places on the way up and down where you can sit and rest awhile. Read below to see what others thought of our Tower and Grounds.

I visited with my local U3A on a wet drab day in October.  Initially hesitant to pay £14 for a tour around the house, i soon discovered how wrong i was.  Mrs Charrington is an outstanding guide and her anecdotes about the history o Layer Marney and its previous occupants were riveting. This is not your run of the mill visit to a listed building full of antiques.  This is a rather eccentric real live history lesson and a very enjoyable one at that.  Not to be missed in my opinion.  Thank you.  I will be back!

U3A Visitor

We had a guided tour of Layer Marney Tower while staying at Goldhanger and it was brilliant, apart from the rainy English weather! The building has been kept in fantastic condition and the views over the grounds are wonderful.  There is a little farm with animals to see as well as a small, limited cafe which offered toasted sandwiches and coffee.  They have shows there and have hosted TV series over the years as well, like the Antiques Roadshow.  Really worth a visit , even just to check out the spiral chimneys!

Guided Tour of Layer Marney Tower

There were 23 of us on this trip and everyone said how good the day was.  They praised Sheila on having such excellent knowledge of the building she calls home.  The cakes and ploughman’s lunch were delicious and plentiful.

Some of the group have already recommended this trip to other groups.

Thank you for a lovely day.

Hockley and Hawkwell U3A – October 2018

On behalf our Ladies’ Club I’d like to thank you so much for making our visit to Layer Marney Tower extremely successful.

All comments about the day have been very positive, praising your excellent guided tour and sharing your expert knowledge in a joyful and interesting way.

Being able to have lunch arranged for us was an added bonus, it was lovely to walk in the old stables, sit down and be served by the pleasant staff.

Ladies’ Club – Guided Tour May 2018

On behalf of Tunbridge Wells U3A, I’d like to thank you, Sheila and Nick for a wonderful time at Layer Marney.  Everyone enthused about it on the way home.

Layer Marney certainly is a lovely place to live and work; I’m very envious!  Can you also convey our thanks to your catering staff, they did a superb job. The lunches were so fresh and tasty and the cakes and drinks were most acceptable after the interesting tour.

We went to the Tower on Easter Sunday, which has become a running tradition in our family.  The Tower has an interesting history and provides great views from the roof.  There are many things you can do such as: a large climbing frame, two cafes, big gardens, a Tudor church which is contemporary to the Tower, Easter Egg Hunts at Easter, horses, lamb feeding, chicken pens, balancing beams and friendly staff.  I definitely recommend this place for visiting.

Easter 2017 Review on Trip Advisor

We all enjoyed seeing the animals very much indeed – including, of course, petting the lambs.  It was good to get up close to the horses. The treasure trail  thrilled 4 year old Amelia and she also loved the egg and spoon race.  Adults and children alike enjoyed visiting the church and climbing up the Tower.  The dolls’ house is a great treat.

Visitor with young family – Easter Weekend 2017

Thanks Karen for all of your help, we had a great afternoon and the kids (and we) were worn out and they enjoyed the freedom. We all liked the lambs, Marmaduke the cat and the little dog, Teasel and we’ve got some great pictures.

Visitor April 2017 – via Email

Took both my boys here specifically to feed the lambs.  But when we arrived there was so much else to explore as well.  We went up the Tower, in the church, on the playground and on the spiders web.  The boys had a great time running around by the fountain.  In addition we fitted in both slots of lamb feeding.  The boys loved it and so did I! The whole venue was really clean and well run but you didn’t feel overly supervised or restricted like you can do in other venues. All the staff were really friendly.  The homemade toffee apple cake was delicious.  We will definitely visit again, with request for Easter Simnel cake in cafe 🙂 Thanks for a really great memory making day.

Layer Marney is awesome and the family and staff who run it are lovely.  I feel forever indebted to them for some magical memories they have given my children including ‘meeting’ Henry VIII at Tudor Day, dancing round the Maypole (where else can you do that these days?) Tudor Christmas and old fashioned Halloween (without the scare fest you get everywhere else) Oh and not to forget the lambs in Spring!  Only sad thing is that some of these events seem to have been discontinued, which is a real shame.  Please keep doing everything you do because you are awesome!

Face Book comment – April 2017, Richard

The view is worth all the stairs.

This attraction has a relaxed feel about it.  There is an interesting museum, a place to get tea and coffee and of course you need to go up all of the stairs to the top and sample the view, which is remarkable.  When I went last year there was scaffolding round, however I plan to go again shortly and see the view from the top, with tea and coffee before and after.

What a fantastic day out for both adults and children, highly recommended

Facebook Review

Sun was out so we took a ride to visit another historical place. Nice drive through the countryside and it’s well sign posted to the the tower. Impressive looking on arrival and plenty of parking. Horses, goats and chickens either side of the driveway leading up to the car park. £9 entry for adults and I’d say it’s well worth it. We spent 2 hours here, wife wanted to feed the lambs as did the rest of the kids!! Good gardens to walk about, church that’s open to look around and a visit up to the top of the tower. Had a nice cuppa from the tea rooms reasonably priced and got loads of photos of the day out. I’d like to do the guided tour here so will probably be back.
