If you are particularly interested in the history why not book your group in for a Guided Tours Tours are for a minimum of 20 people, they are generally led by one of the owners, and are a really good way to get a feel for the Tower and why it is such a grand and ornate building that was never finished.
I visited with my local U3A on a wet drab day in October. Initially hesitant to pay £14 for a tour around the house, i soon discovered how wrong i was. Mrs Charrington is an outstanding guide and her anecdotes about the history o Layer Marney and its previous occupants were riveting. This is not your run of the mill visit to a listed building full of antiques. This is a rather eccentric real live history lesson and a very enjoyable one at that. Not to be missed in my opinion. Thank you. I will be back!
“Excellent tour by Sheila, we were all amazed at her knowledge without any notes. All my group said it was one of the best Tours we have ever had.
Very nice lunch prepared by two lovely ladies.
An excellent day out, finished off by feeding the lambs”
Tour Leader – 4th April 2019
My partner and I were lucky enough to be on a coach trip last weekend and so got the opportunity to attend an amazing day at your beautiful home. From start to finish it was a complete joy, the tour was so much fun and informative. The meal weas lovely and the setting perfect. And i don’t even know where to begin with the amazing concert in the most beautiful church. We have had many lovely Christmas days out over the years, but this whole experience tops them all!!
Please let your singers know that their voices were fantastic and the narration was wonderful!
So thank you all concerned for a wonderful day, it really started off our Christmas in the most special way.
We certainly hope we can make the trip next year and many years to come.
We had a guided tour of Layer Marney Tower while staying at Goldhanger and it was brilliant, apart from the rainy English weather! The building has been kept in fantastic condition and the views over the grounds are wonderful. There is a little farm with animals to see as well as a small, limited cafe which offered toasted sandwiches and coffee. They have shows there and have hosted TV series over the years as well, like the Antiques Roadshow. Really worth a visit , even just to check out the spiral chimneys!
There were 23 of us on this trip and everyone said how good the day was. They praised Sheila on having such excellent knowledge of the building she calls home. The cakes and ploughman’s lunch were delicious and plentiful.
Some of the group have already recommended this trip to other groups.
Thank you for a lovely day.
On behalf our Ladies’ Club I’d like to thank you so much for making our visit to Layer Marney Tower extremely successful.
All comments about the day have been very positive, praising your excellent guided tour and sharing your expert knowledge in a joyful and interesting way.
Being able to have lunch arranged for us was an added bonus, it was lovely to walk in the old stables, sit down and be served by the pleasant staff.
On behalf of Tunbridge Wells U3A, I’d like to thank you, Sheila and Nick for a wonderful time at Layer Marney. Everyone enthused about it on the way home.
Layer Marney certainly is a lovely place to live and work; I’m very envious! Can you also convey our thanks to your catering staff, they did a superb job. The lunches were so fresh and tasty and the cakes and drinks were most acceptable after the interesting tour.
Absolutely most enjoyable and enlightening visit – everyone was delighted – so thank you for your time and effort – we will be back!
Thank you so much for such a fascinating and well presented tour on Tuesday. I have had lots of great feedback from participants and all of us really enjoy tours of this nature especially when we are made to feel so welcome! The scones were pretty good as well!!
I have received many kind comments from our members thanking me for taking them to such an interesting and lovely location. Many had not visited Layer Marney previously and were very impressed with all you had to offer on site. The Guided Tours were very highly rated for the wealth of information given and excellent (and humorous) delivery.
It was indeed a lovely day at Layer Marney Tower – most of our group had not visited before and were very generous with their praise, particularly the excellent tours given by both Sheila and Nicholas Charrington, so I can quite categorically say that all enjoyed it very much indeed and have had numerous phone calls to that effect. The cream tea/cake was also a great hit.
Each time I visit Layer Marney it never disappoints, there is always something new or something I had forgotten, it really is one of my favourite houses.
Thankyou very much for looking after my party so well and with such patience and consideration. I’ve had nothing but praise from members of the group and, given the weather, it must have been heartfelt. I have huge admiration for your constant hard work keeping the Tower together. Wonderful loos, lunch just right.
Your tour yesterday could not have been more enjoyable. You packed in so much architectural history and Tudor chornoology…Layer Marney is in good hands.
Thank you for a very interesting and informative tour. I think this was the best tour we have had.
Lots of history, stories, jokes – all very educational
Would recommend Layer Marney Tower to my friends. Well worth a visit.
Layer Marney is a delightful house in a great position. The owners couldnt have been more helpful.
A big “thank you” to all who were involved in our Guided Tour last week. Even though the weather wasn’t good, everyone had a brilliant time!! Our Guided Tours were the best ever (and we have been around, ha! ha!) and everyone loved the house and tower. The ladies who served the tea and cake were lovely and thankyou all for making us so welcome. It was a truly memorable day out visiting Essex sights and ended on a high with Layer Marney.
This is just to thank you once again for the welcome and the excellent Guided Tour you gave us last Thursday. For the rest of the day, everyone on the coach was saying how lovely Layer Marney was and how great the tour had been. And several people were saying how they are going to spread the word about Layer Marney and make return visits with other groups/friends. In spite of some reservations beforehand, i think most people made it to the top of the Tower – and thos who didn’t think they could but then did, boasted about it later!
The day was well orgnised. The food was excellent and the guided tour from Mrs Charington, the owner, was first class. She is a very accomplished, humorous speaker with a great hands on way of explaining the history and what it is like to live in the Tower. I would strongly recommend a vist with lunch and a Guided Tour.
