Chamber Concert in aid of The Friends of the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Layer Marney

10 February 2023 |7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Following on from the success of the chamber concert last year, Orlando Jopling and friends will be playing some wonderful late Mozart and the 1902 Dohnanyi: Serenade in C major. The Mozart piece was composed in 1788, the same year as the late three symphonies, Eb Divertimento K563 is a joy to listen to, especially when played by such talented musicians as Sijie Chen, Hannah Shaw and Orlando Jopling. The ticket price includes a glass of fizz and we much look forward to you joining us as we shake off the February blues...

Mozart Divertimento in Eb major K563

Dohnanyi: Serenade in C major, Op. 10, for violin, viola & cello (1902)

  1. Marcia: Allegro
  2. Romanza: Adagio non troppo
  3. Scherzo: Vivace
  4. Tema con variazioni: Andante con moto
  5. Rondo (Finale): Allegro vivace

Sijie Chen violin

Sijie ‘Susie’ Chen was a string finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition. Her passion for chamber music has led to collaborations with Nicola Benedetti, Roderick Williams, Iestyn Davies, Alasdair Beatson and Huw Watkins, at the Edinburgh International Festival, Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music and other festivals worldwide.

She is also the co-leader of the London Mozart Players and plays with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, having previously been a member of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. On period instruments she plays with the Academy of Ancient Music and the English Concert.

Hannah Shaw viola

A graduate of the Juilliard School, Hannah has performed throughout Europe and the USA, both as a chamber musician (with The Hague String Variations, Trio De Kooning, the Eusebius Quartet and others) and an orchestral player.

Hannah has served as guest leader with a number of orchestras, including BBC National Orchestra of Wales and The Hague Philharmonic. Her interest in contemporary music has included collaborations with notable composers such as Eliott Carter, Louis Andriessen, Sofia Gubaidulina, and James MacMillan.

Orlando Jopling cello

Orlando Jopling grew up beside an Essex marsh and went on to study cello with William Pleeth, Alexander Baillie and Raphael Wallfisch. He has recorded the six Bach suites for solo cello among many other discs, and has given over 140 solo recitals as part of his ‘Cello Pilgrimage’, raising almost £100,000 towards the restoration and upkeep of remote medieval parish churches. He has played chamber music in major festivals, and plays with the LSO and Philharmonia.

Orlando programmes the Roman River Festival each year in North Essex, and regularly conducts large-scale operas by Wagner, Puccini, Janacek and Strauss in London. Last year he founded Wild Arts, which produces the Essex Summer Opera Festival at Layer Marney Tower and takes chamber operas to around 30 venues every summer.
