On this second day of the Funeral Procession, documented in the Marney scrolls held by the College of Arms, Henry Marney’s Funeral Procession visited both Churches which are either side of the Hackney Marshes and his body came to rest at the church in Chingford for the second night.
This will not be the identical route, as London has grown and the Roads are too busy, but this glorious 10 mile walk is through Mile End Park, Victoria Park, touches the Olympic Park and then goes along the Lee Valley tow path. It is surprisingly rural, with only a few roads at the beginning and end.
There is no need to dress up, wear comfortable clothes (and shoes) and bring your water bottle. Dogs welcome on leads
There are pubs and cafes along the way and both Churches have generously offered refreshments.
The walk is FREE but please book in, as we need to know numbers. We can then send you details of the route.
We are selling Tabards in Henry Marney’s Livery (made from specially printed tea towels). We hope lots of you will buy one so the day has a feeling of community. They are NOT compulsory. Afterward you can cut off the straps and turn them into something practical! Cost: £12
If you would like to donate to the Friends of St Marney the Virgin, Layer Marney you would be very popular. This is where Henry Marney’s body was finally laid to rest.
