500 year Celebration of Henry VIII’s Visit

21 August 2022 |11:00 am - 5:00 pm

Almost 500 years to the day, Henry VIII came to visit his long time friend and Courtier, Henry Marney, at Layer Marney Tower. Come and celebrate with us.

We will be celebrating a unique anniversary.

Did you know that Henry VIII made a visit to Layer Marney Tower in August 1522, even though Henry Marney was only part way through building his magnificent Palace? We have a big celebration to commemorate such an important event and invite you to come and take part and immerse yourself in the day’s events.

Our stage and our actors are set in the Tudor period.

Follow Henry VIII as he walks around the buildings, listen to his speech to Lord Marney on the steps in front of the tower and see him be treated by The Cunning Woman in our beautifully renovated barn.

Henry Marney has done much to entertain Henry VIII, he has brought out the Birds, the Maypole, the Cunning Woman, his Scrivener, his Craftsmen, his Blackwork embroider and of course his Archery. Come and join in, see the spectacle, try your hand at Archery, mend your ails and dance a Maypole. Fancy Dress welcome but absolutely not essential!

Many thanks to all our participants including

John White (Henry Marney),  Philip Downing (Henry VIII),  Hilary Mynott  (Cunning Woman and Maypole instructress), Maria Antoinette Brown (Blackwork Embroider) Eden Falconry (carer and flyer of the Birds),  Companye of Merrie Folke (Scrivener, Basket Weaver and Archers) Emma Mordue (Musician)

Here is a nice Press summary from Essex County Standard

Please note: Historic Houses Membership cards are NOT applicable on this day
