Educational Visits in Essex

In this year of Covid, we have missed our many schools and are looking forward to their return. We have put careful plans in place to ensure as safe a visit as possible. As well as a great educational offer, the open space and country surroundings gives the children great reassurance, helps build up their confidence after so long in lockdown

Open throughout the year for school groups, from Reception through to Sixth Form, England’s tallest Tudor gatehouse, Layer Marney Tower, offers an exciting range of educational programmes.  The cost is £8.00 per child plus VAT (minimum charge £240 plus VAT) 1 adult per 10 children free, 1:1 support staff free.  Any additional adults – £7 per person including VAT.

In 2016 we were delighted to have been given a Sandford Award. This is an independently judged and quality assured award for education in heritage sites. Some of the others to be given a Sandford Award the same year were; Beaulieu, Durham Cathedral, The Fitzwilliam Museum and Kensington Palace.  The judge summed up her report saying “The day is well-paced, varied and includes many learning styles.  The children are actively involved and encouraged to relate to what they have studied in school to the history of the site.  The teachers can be assured of a warm welcome, a well organised day and a first rate learning experience for their pupils”.

Built in the 1520’s by Henry, Lord Marney, Privy Councillor to Henry VII and Henry VIII, he accompanied Henry VIII to the Field of the Cloth of Gold, we are an ideal place to come and learn about Tudor life. However, we can offer more, providing days covering; Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Romans, Vikings, Anglo Saxons, Normans, Medieval, Egyptians, and Greeks.

We had a FANTASTIC (Covid safe) day, It was so lovely to experience a “normal” trip out. The staff were extremely knowledgeable, activities relevant and well delivered and we learnt a lot.

Home Farm – November 2020 Bronze Age

I just wanted to drop you a quick email thanking you for an excellent visit at Layer Marney today. The children had a wonderful time and didn’t stop talking about what they had learnt on the coach home! I also overhead some of them saying to their parents what a great day they had! It was lovely to see them having the opportunity to learn outside the classroom especially considering that we are living in a strange time so thank you also for making it COVID- safe and stress free for our staff.

We hope to visit you again in the future!
