In 2016 we were delighted to have been given a Sandford Award. This is an independently judged and quality assured award for education in heritage sites. Some of the others to be given a Sandford Award the same year were; Beaulieu, Durham Cathedral, The Fitzwilliam Museum and Kensington Palace. The judge summed up her report saying “The day is well-paced, varied and includes many learning styles. The chldren are actively involved and encouraged to relate to what they have studied in school to the history of the site. The teachers can be assured of a warm welcome, a well organised day and a first rate learning experience for their pupils”.
Built in the 1520’s by Henry, Lord Marney, Privy Councillor to Henry VII and Henry VIII, he accompanied Henry VIII to the Field of the Cloth of Gold, we are an ideal place to come and learn about Tudor life. However, we can offer more, providing days covering; Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Romans, Vikings, Anglo Saxons, Normans, Medieval, Egyptians, and Greeks.

The children were engaged in the activities and the hands on approach really helped our 24 boys especially. Feeding the lambs was an added treat too. I would recommend the whole day to others.
We had a great day and many of the children returned saying it was “the best trip we have ever been on” Thank you
Hosts were really friendly, helpful and knowledgable. Animals were an extra bonus! All the children thoroughly enjoyed it as did the adults!
We visited last year and the experience was very good. However, this year the experience was even better due to the change in activities. The archaeological dig was very informative (delivered by Hilary) as well as the afternoon talk (and handling of wooly mammoth tusks and bones etc). Hilary was very well informed and engaged all children with her extensive knowledge of the past and the Stone Age.
Well done Hilary – we will definitely be be booking again next year.
