Some of the others to be given a Sandford Award in 2016 are; Beaulieu, Durham Cathedral, The Fitzwilliam Museum and Kensington Palace.  The judge summed up her report saying “The day is well-paced, varied and includes many learning styles.  The chldren are actively involved and encouraged to relate to what they have studied in school to the history of the site.  The teachers can be assured of a warm welcome, a well organised day and a first rate learning experience for their pupils”.

Built in the 1520’s by Henry, Lord Marney, Privy Councillor to Henry VII and Henry VIII, he accompanied Henry VIII to the Field of the Cloth of Gold, we are an ideal place to come and learn about Tudor life. However, we can offer more, providing days covering; Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Romans, Vikings, Anglo Saxons, Normans, Medieval, Egyptians, and Greeks.

We loved the day!  The children were inspired and excited by everything they took part in.  The day was well paced and the staff were fantastic!!  Our children were thrilled by the trip and the work they produced once back in school, displayed clearly how much they enjoyed it.  Thank you so much Layer Marney Tower

Year 1 Teacher

Course taken – George and the Dragon

Essex Primary School – June 2017

Our trip was both enjoyable (for children and adults) and educational.  For my “busy” class, it was just the right mix of content with facts-a-plenty (we loved the stuffed dormice!), practical activities and real life stories.  The ladies who led the sessions were not only friendly and approachable but also very knowledgeable about the Roman era – this was evident in how and what they presented to the class. Both had fabulous skills in dealing with my SEND children, with that extra compassion and  patience.  Thank you.

Highlights included food tasting, tiger catching, rabbit hooking, becoming gladiators and of course…the adventure playground and grass maze!! Thanks Layer Marney for a thoroughly enjoyable and educational day.

Essex Primary School – Romans, November 2018

Our class had a fantastic day at Layer Marney.  Our tour up the Tower was brilliant, the guide was informative and fun with great control of the classes. We chose food, medicine and games – our favourite session was the games as it was the most practical.  Lots of new information learned by all.  Would definitely return.

Thank you so much for having us on Monday for our School Trip.  The children thoroughly enjoyed their day.

Please can you also pass on our thanks to Hilary for being such an excellent leader.  The children learnt so much and were totally captivated by her explanations of Tudor life and architecture.
