Behind the Scenes During the Winter Months…
When the last visitor leaves, on the last day of the House Opening Season, at the end of September, the Layer Marney Tower team do allow themselves a big sigh of relief that the season has gone well, but that is only a brief moment, we are very soon back on the plot.
Open All Year Round
Weddings, school groups, conferences, parties, meetings, guided tours and group visits continue throughout the year. All made possible by our state of the art, biomass boiler, to keep everyone warm. Although at the time of writing it is unseasonally mild and sunny, last year we were somewhat taken aback to have to light braziers in the courtyard and were worried that coaches might not be able to arrive through the snow. We have to be prepared for all eventualities.
Although undeniably the summer term is the most popular for school groups, with June almost a sell out already, the changes in the National Curriculum a few years back meant only about half our school groups study Tudors with us, the rest choose from an astonishingly wide range of subjects from Egyptians to Vikings, Pirates to Stone Age. Year round availability means the children can come at a time to fit in with when they are covering the different subjects.
Groups Direct Christmas Tours
This is our second year working with Groups Direct, a wholesale tour company, providing high quality tours. We are currently preparing for their A Christmas Carol. After coffee on arrival the groups will enjoy a Guided Tour of the Tower, decked out in its Christmas finery, then sit down to a traditional Christmas lunch in the Long Gallery, They make their way across the lawns to the parish church for an abridged version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and enjoy mulled wine, mince pies before leaving. A day out guaranteed to put even the Grinch in a jovial Christmas mood!
And so it goes on. As we move into the icy grip of January, we start to plan events for 2019 and look forward to bottle feeding the lambs and start preparing the Easter Quiz.
