Woodland and Parkland
The
nucleus of the Layer Marney estate is the range of buildings erected by
the Marney family. These are surrounded by extensive formal gardens, which
in turn are encompassed by parkland and woodland. Meandering through the
estate is Layer Brook, a small stream that gives its name to the villages
of Layer Marney, Layer Breton and Layer de la Haye.
The
formal gardens were largely laid out by Walter De Zoete, who lived here
in the early 20th Century and who had the assistance of 13 staff within
the house, and 16 outside, to ensure the smooth running of his estate.
Two
fields lying to the south of the buildings are of flat grassland, 25 acres
and 17 acres respectively. They lend themselves to all sorts of outdoor
activities such as marquee based events, outdoor concerts, archery, jousting,
clay pigeons and large scale team building events. The other 60 acres
of grass and woodland provide habitat for a wide range of wildlife, and
are accessible to anyone wishing to recharge their batteries.
