Lucy and Joe tell the story of their Layer Marney Tower Wedding
When did the proposal take place and how did it happen?
We got engaged on the morning of 28th November 2015. Very traditionally, Joe had spoken to Lucy’s Dad the night before to ask for his blessing, so her parents knew about Joe’s plans and were waiting by the phone for a call! We were at home in Kew, South West London when Joe proposed – he made a lovely breakfast in bed before getting down on one knee.
How many venues did you visit and why did you choose Layer Marney Tower?
Layer Marney was the first venue that we visited and we fell in love with it straight away. Not only is it a stunning venue, but right from the outset everyone was so welcoming and answered all of the many questions that we had, so we felt in very safe hands. It soon became obvious that the team were incredibly flexible and just wanted to ensure that we had the best day – they couldn’t have done more for us and were happy to help in any way they could. We did visit one other venue after that, but it was no comparison, so we decided to stop doing any more searching and booked in our date for April 2017.
How far in advance did you book your wedding day?
We paid our deposit 16 months before our wedding day.
Did you have a theme?
We didnt have a theme as such, but we did want to make sure that our flowers and decorations were in keeping with the venue. The Groomsmen and Bridesmaids were in royal blue and our flowers were white and green, so we decorated the Long Gallery with matching bunting and lots of photos of both of us. Having said that, we did introduce a bit of an African/Safari theme to the photo booth, as Lucy’s Dad is from South Africa and we were off to Kruger on our honeymoon!
How did you choose which suppliers you used?
We mainly took advice from Layer Marney and often booked their preferred suppliers, who we were able to meet on their open days (including W Flowers and David Islip Photography). We also looked at the shortlist of the Essex Wedding Awards to see which hair and make up artists and bands etc had been recognised in the last couple of years. It was through these searches that we found Michelle at Bumblebee Bridal, who did a fantastic job with Lucy’s and her bridesmaids’ hair and make up, and The Hot Shots, who kept the dance floor filled all evening!
What were the highlights of your day or particularly memorable moments?
Everyone always tells you that the day goes past so quickly, but it really does fly by and we wish we could do it all over again. We could not fault anything at all, but one of the most unusual moments that our guests often comment on, was the opportunity to bottle feed the lambs during our canape reception. This was fantastic to keep all of the children occupied (and the adults loved it too!) It became such a talking point and was certainly unique to our wedding – it’s not something you often see and just one example of how Layer Marney really do go the extra mile.
Do you have any advice for Brides and Grooms just starting their wedding planning?
Some Brides and Grooms start out with a vision of exactly what they would like, but we found it quite difficult to visualise how our day was going to come together, particularly as you book things so far in advance and there are so many ideas and choices out there. For anyone that feels the same, definitely go with your first instinct – if a venue feels right for you, everything else will come together. You can spend hours and hours researching and planning the perfect day, but whatever decisions you make, you will still both have a fantastic time surrounded with your family and friends and no amount of planning can prepare you for how great that is!
