During his reign Henry 1st Lord Marney, his Lord Privy Seal started building Layer Marney Tower. It was built in competition to Hampton Court and is the tallest Tudor Gatehouse in the Country. David Starkey's new book about the youthful Henry VIII has some interesting insight to Henry Marney and has given us documentary evidence that Henry VIII did in fact stay at the Tower in August 1522. He must have been keen to see the Tower as he stayed while the building works were still going on. As part of the celebrations we are partying on Henry VIII’s birthday. On Sunday 28th June we have Tudor entertainment and a visit from the King himself! (see our Events page for more detail) Layer Marney Tower will appear on Time Team, Channel 4 The Time Team as part of the national celebrations for Henry VIII are doing a special edition of the programme about Henry VIII's Palaces and is due to be televised on Easter Sunday on Channel 4*. They have been digging up some of New Hall in Essex, a Palace that Henry VIII bought from Anne Boleyn's father in 1516 just before the birth of Mary. They will also be digging up an area of Hampton Court. They came to Layer Marney Tower to film the terracotta work on the windows and on Henry Marney's tomb. Henry VIII loved the intricate designs the Italians could work into the terracotta and was keen to include it in his buildings. There is very little of it left in the country and Layer Marney Tower has some of the finest to be found. * this timing may change, check Channel 4's schedule New opening times for 2009 The Layer Marney Tower season starts on 1st April.
