Visiting the Tower - Educational

Senior Schools' Technology Day - Tuesday 9th February 2010

Last year, in conjunction with the University of Essex, we ran a very successful Technology Day for senior schools and I’m very pleased to confirm that we will be repeating the event again this year.

Our next Technology Day for senior schools will be held on Tuesday 9th February and we would like to invite your students to take part. The day will commence at 10am with departure at approximately 2.30pm. Dr John Woods from the Department of Computing and Electronic Systems at the University of Essex, will be working with the students to create ‘The Great Egg Race’. Students will design and build a vehicle to move a boiled egg the furthest using only a rubber band and at the end of the day each team will put their efforts to the test.

We are writing to all local senior schools and numbers will be limited. The cost per student is £7.00 and materials for the experiment will be provided however it would be useful if schools collect and bring along as many plastic lemonade/coke PEP bottles as possible. We suggest that each participant brings a packed lunch along with them.

If your school would like to take part, please call Sally on 01206 330784 or email

Layer Marney Tower is pleased to announce dates for the annual fortnight dedicated to schools. The days will specialise in history and technology, bringing various aspects of the school curriculum to life in a fun and ‘hands on’ environment.

Health & Safety Visit
A Health & Safety visit is recommended prior to your visit. This will be held on Monday 17th May 2010 at 4.30pm. If you can't come on this date please contact us to arrange an alternative time. The school is responsible for having the right ratio of adults:children. Layer Marney Tower gives free entry to one adult for every 10 children. Additional adults @ £4.00.

Technology Days - Wednesday 9th June and Thursday 17th June 2010
THE GREAT EGG RACE
We are delighted that the Department of Engineering from the University of Essex will be joining us again at Layer Marney Tower for The Great Egg Race. Students will enjoy a fun 'hands on' day designing and building a vehicle to move a boiled egg the furthest using only a rubber band. At the end of the day, each team will put their efforts to the rest in the race. Prizes will be awarded to the most innovating team.
£7.50 PER CHILD

History days - Tuesday 8th June, Thursday 10th June, Tuesday 15th June & Wednesday 16th June 2010
LEARN ABOUT THE TUDORS
Jackie Marshall Ward and Marion Panzetta will again be joining us with her fascinating collection of costumes, artefacts & musical instruments from Tudor Times. Jackie will demonstrate the ‘Tudor Strip’ which will help the students understand the layers of clothes worn by the Tudors. They will then have the opportunity to take part in some dancing and playing of instruments. Jackie is a qualified teacher and her excellent rapport with the students makes for a very enjoyable learning experience. A tour of the tower is also included. Schools are welcome to wear costume although it is not essential.
£7.50 PER CHILD

Each day will start at 10am and finish at 2.30pm and we ask that the children bring a packed lunch. The tearoom and shop will be open and coach parking is available without charge.
