Open throughout the year for school groups, England's tallest Tudor gatehouse, Layer Marney Tower offers an exciting range of educational programmes. Built in the 1520's by Henry, Lord Marney Privy Councillor to Henry VII and Henry VIII, he accompanied Henry VIII to the Field of the Cloth of Gold. Both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I stayed at Layer Marney Tower.

 

Learn about The Tudors

As part of the Primary School National Curriculum, a visit to Layer Marney Tower can bring the period to life for your pupils. Choose three modules from the list below to study during the day;

 

  • Tudor Food
  • Tudor Medicine
  • Tudor Use of Plants
  • Tudor Arms and Armour
  • Tudor School Room
  • Tudor Games and Dancing
  • Tudor Daily Life
  • Tudor Tombs

 

The modules can also be adapted for pupils at Key Stage 3.

In addition to the three modules you choose, each school party will be taken on a guided tour of the Tower.

 

Early Years, Reception and KS1 -  Beauty & the Beast

  • Follow Beauty & the Beast's rose trail
  • Be a Beast - learn to growl, stalk, pounce & creep like the Beast
  • Search for the beast, is he at the top of the Tower?
  • Make a sticky Beast
  • Play Musical Beasts
  • Make Beauty's crown or a beastly mask
  • Story telling -  Beauty and the Beast

Early Years, Reception and KS1 - The Big Red Layer Marney Bus

 

A TRANSPORT DAY activities based round the Layer Marney Routmaster Bus. Each activity will be at different Bus Stops

 

 

  • Farm Stop- find animals used to transport people, look at the Layer Marney animals, make an animal  mask or puppet
  • Barn Stop - Transport hunt, find a bike, car, tractor etc.  Make sand/salt and glue picture
  • Tower Stop - make and fly paper plans or gliders or make and float your own boat
  • Climb the Tower - for story telling and songs
  • Car Park Stop - Explore the bus; climb the stairs, sit int he driver's seat, ring the bell, count the wheels.  Take a ticket to ride for your mini passport

 

NEW FOR 2013 - KS2 LITERACY - MEET THE ANCESTORS

 

(Cross Curricular covering History, English, Geography, Maths)

 

 

  • Search for Layer Marney Tower ghosts
  • You may find;  Lord Marney (died 1523 before he finished his Tudor Palace) Sarah Brewer the Ale Mistress (died of plague in 1563) and Joan Gibson, hung as a witch for allegedly burning down Messing Windmill (drowned 1587)
  • learn key skills for ghost hunting, do you believe what you see and hear?
  • Follow the clues to find the ghosts
  • Question the ghosts

An action packed hands on day which encourages and develops literacy skills; asking questions, note taking, listening, interpreting text, hypothesizing, drawing a conclusion and defending a conclusion, use of evidence.  Basic journalism skill; what, where why when and how.

 

School groups can visit Layer Marney Tower throughout the year, any week day except Friday.  We can take up to 200 pupils a day.  If the weather isn't good, pupils can eat their packed lunches in the Long Gallery.

 

School groups to Layer Marney Tower are led by qualified teachers dressed in costume, children are also encouraged to come dressed in costume (guidelines will be sent to you) however, it is not essential for them to dress up.

 

Cost

Early Years, Reception, KS1, KS2 and KS3

£8.00 per child, for groups of 30 or over, there will be a slight increase per child for smaller groups.   The appropriate number of adults are free of charge (it is recommended one adult to every 10 children at KS1 and KS2, 1 adult to every child at KS3)  Additional adults - £5.00 per head.

 

Early Years -  each child may bring one adult free of charge.

 

Preparatory visit

Teachers are encouraged to make an appointment for a preparatory visit to check out any health & safety issues.

Days Itinerary

Each day will start at 10am and finish at 2.30pm and we ask that the children bring a packed lunch. The gift shop will be open and coach parking is available.
