Layer Marney Tower - school visits for Tudor learning outside the classroom

Open throughout the year for school groups, England's tallest Tudor gatehouse, Layer Marney Tower offers an exciting range of educational programmes. Built in the 1520's by Henry, Lord Marney Privy Councillor to Henry VII and Henry VIII, he accompanied Henry VIII to the Field of the Cloth of Gold. Both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I stayed at Layer Marney Tower.

Learn about The Tudors

As part of the Primary School National Curriculum, a visit to Layer Marney Tower can bring the period to life for your pupils. Choose three modules from the list below to study during the day;

  • Tudor Food
  • Tudor Medicine
  • Tudor Use of Plants
  • Tudor Arms and Armour
  • Tudor School Room
  • Tudor Games and Dancing
  • Tudor Daily Life
  • Tudor Tombs

The modules can also be adapted for pupils at Key Stage 3.

In addition to the three modules you choose, each school party will be taken on a guided tour of the Tower.

School groups can visit Layer Marney Tower throughout the year, any week day except Friday.  We can take up to 200 pupils a day.  If the weather isn't good, pupils can eat their packed lunches in the Long Gallery.

School groups to Layer Marney Tower are led by qualified teachers dressed in costume, children are also encouraged to come dressed in costume (guidelines will be sent to you) however, it is not essential for them to dress up.

Cost

£8.00 per child, for groups of 30 or over, there will be a slight increase per child for smaller groups.   The appropriate number of adults are free of charge (it is recommended one adult to every 10 children at KS1 and KS2, 1 adult to every child at KS3)  Additional adults - £5.00 per head.
