Visiting the Tower - Educational

Layer Marney Tower is pleased to announce dates for the annual fortnight dedicated to schools. The days will specialise in history, geography and technology bringing various aspects of the school curriculum to life in a fun and ‘hands on’ environment.

Health & Safety Visit
A Health & Safety visit is recommended prior to your visit. This will be held on Tuesday 13th May 2008 at 4.30pm. If you can't come on this date please contact us to arrange an alternative time. The school is responsible for having the right ratio of adults:children. Layer Marney Tower gives free entry to one adult for every 10 children. Additional adults @ £4.00.

Technology Days - Wednesday 4th & Thursday 5th June 2008
MAKING & TESTING WIND TURBINES
We are delighted that the Department of Engineering from the University of Essex will be joining us at Layer Marney Tower to demonstrate renewable energy to schools. Students will enjoy a fun ‘hands on’ day making and testing wind turbines. Prizes will be awarded to the teams producing the Best Made, Best Engineered and Best Innovation. Numbers will be limited. Inter-school competition is welcome.
£6.75 PER CHILD

History days - 2nd, 3rd, 10th & 11th June 2008
LEARN ABOUT THE TUDORS
Jackie Marshall Ward will again be joining us with her fascinating collection of costumes, artefacts & musical instruments from Tudor Times. Jackie will demonstrate the ‘Tudor Strip’ which will help the students understand the layers of clothes worn by the Tudors. They will then have the opportunity to take part in some dancing and playing of instruments. Jackie is a qualified teacher and her excellent rapport with the students makes for a very enjoyable learning experience. A tour of the tower is also included. Schools are welcome to wear costume although it is not essential.
£7.50 PER CHILD

Geography day - Thursday 12th June 2008
EARTHQUAKES
In 1884 Essex was rocked by the Great Earthquake. Learn about the earthquake from the information and press cuttings available and find out what damage was done to the Tower. Learn about tectonic plates, intensity scales and epicentres. Work with copies of original documents and photographs from the time to gather information on current earthquake patterns. From the Tower, using old maps and the Ordnance Survey maps, spot and identify features in the landscape putting them in context with the 1884 earthquake.
£6.00 PER CHILD

Each day will start at 10am and finish at 2.30pm and we ask that the children bring a packed lunch. The tearoom and shop will be open and coach parking is available without charge.
