Antiques Roadshow at Layer Marney Tower

About 3500 people came to see the BBC filming the Antiques Roadshow at Layer Marney Tower on 12th May.

 

Amongst the antique experts were Hilary Kay, Mark Hill, Katherine Higgins, Rupert Maas, Nicholas Mitchell, Alice Montague Doublas-Scott, Steven Moore, Philip Mould, Christopher Payne, Ian Pickford, Lars Tharp, Paul Viney, Marc Allum Paul Atterbury, John Benhamin, Elaine Binning and Bunny Campione.

 

They were delighted with the articles which were brought in by the visitors. These included an teddy bear thought to be worth between £5000 and £10,000, Shackleton's first aid kit which he had taken on his trip to the South Pole, a piece of jade worth £30,000, some original drawings from the Orlando the cat books and from the Noddy books. An original painting by Rolf Harris, the kitchen table from which Mary Whitehouse wrote her angry letters. Some of the "best Rupert Brooke memorabilia" to be seen on the Roadshow brought in by a woman who's grandfaterh had been with Brooke when he died. There were 1930's Hawain shirts, Biba clothes, fabulous bracelets the things kept pouring in.

 

The crowd was good natured and cheerful as they queued for up to four hours from leaving their cars in the car park. Their precious treasures arrived wrapped in blankets, or in large cardboard boxes, on trolleys, or in suit cases, they were trundled in and lovingly unwrapped. The experts gave each visitor lots of time and expertise and everyone had a really fun day.
