A Day in the Life of Layer Marney Tower

28 June, 2001

Our bank manager came to spend the day with us at Layer Marney Tower. As part of his role he has to select clients and spend a day with them to see how their businesses work. We are delighted he chose to come to us.

It is always pretty busy here and the day he came was no exception. There was a school trip from Great Clacton Primary School, 60 children were learning about Tudor Medicine, Arms and Armour and Tudor Games and Dancing. They were also taken up the 100 steps to the top of the Tower.

Then there was a guided tour for 40 people who are taken into parts of the house that the general visitor does not get to see.

He moved on to the glamping (posh camping) the six tented encampments, each with their own hot tubs, showers, and running water and tried his hand at using the static bike to generate the electricity for the tents. He saw the work of the team who look after the site and how they clean and prepare the tents for visitors, filling up the wood supplies for the wood burning stoves, stocking the little shop known as the Bothy, how they manage the laundry, special requests etc.

Libby, the head gardener explained how she keeps the gardend looking good throughout the year. Each month of the year must show the garden off to its best advantage. He saw the enormous work load of the cleaners who have to turn the place round after a wedding (they come in to do a late night clean in the early hours of the morning. He learnt about our extensive progamme of events during the summer monhts and what needs to be done to look after our visitors who come to the Tower.

It was a full and busy day and we hope he enjoyed the visit as much as we enjoyed having him here.
