It is 500 years since the death of Henry, 1st Lord Marney in 1523. Henry Marney was Henry VIII’s Lord Privy Seal and Layer Marney Tower is his statement house, built to shows his wealth and his power, reflecting his relationship with the King.

Layer Marney Tower is England’s tallest Tudor Gatehouse, standing within the Essex landscape, commanding views to the River Blackwater.

Layer Marney Tower is a lovely place to celebrate. We have spaces that can cope with all sorts of different numbers. We have been used for everything from Company Awards to Childrens’ Prize givings, from Wedding anniversaries to the arrival of a baby.

Hidden in the woods are 6 Glamour Camping tents, with real beds, running water and proper lavatories! In the Tudor buildings we have an apartment that sleeps two people, occasionally available through AirBnB.

Winners of a Sandford Award, we take our educational offer very seriously. Open all year round for schools and groups. Our Tudor buildings are used to offer an exciting range of educational programmes covering all Key stages and also outward-bound and Forest School activities.
